Blog 370: Keeping the spark alive

keep spark alive

We go through so many times in life when things are hard, there are so many things that take our attention, there are so many things that take our energy, there are so many things that make us feel romantic and we all want to have those moments. There are many times where the ‘spark’ can disappear throughout a relationship. When this happens we need to make more of an effort to keep the spark alive in our relationship and our marriage. When we were first dating I remember the times when we would write letters to each other, we would spend our evenings together, we would spend time going for walks, we would cook dinner together but then life happens. We get busy, we have things to do, we have people to see, we have commitments to others, we have days that are busier than others.

Throughout the different seasons of life we need to make sure we keep the spark alive in our relationship and in our marriage. When we were just about to get married we decided to put a date in the diary every month so that we are able to have a date night and to keep the the spark alive. We decided to make it the 4th of every month because that is our wedding date and so it makes sense to us. It is a time when we are able to put everything to one side and to be able to just focus on each other and keeping that spark alive. We want to put all the stress to one side, we can just be together and as life continues and gets on top of us we are able to take time out to put everything to one side and focus on each other. Life is bound to get busy, children are going to come along, jobs are going to get stressful, changes are going to happen and so to put this date to one side is special for both of us as it helps to keep our spark alive.

In the coming years life will get more hectic, life will go fast, days will fly by, months will go quickly and we will wonder where the years have gone. In this time we have to take the moment, we have to take any time we can get on our own. As much as we want to spend time with family and friends we need to have time with our spouses too and we need to show the other person how much we love and appreciate them. There will be days that are harder than others but if we put time aside for that other person we will be able to keep the spark alive in our marriage and we will have time with the person that we love. No matter what life throws at us, how many children we have you still need to have time with your spouse. Think back to the dating days you have and how you felt, which was your best one and do it again in marriage.

Dating is a weird time in life where we get to know the other person but when we are married we can get into the mundane parts of life. We can let the spark go in our love and we need to not let that happen as before we know it we will be old and drifting apart. There are so many people that don’t spend time with their spouse and they have problems, just because you are married does not mean that you should date your partner and still get to know them. Keeping the spark alive isn’t just about buying your spouse flowers, cooking their best meal, having the house clean, making sure the children are fed but instead making time to talk to them. Talking to your spouse is one of the most important things that you can do with your spouse, you will learn so much more about your spouse by talking to them than to watch them.

Talking and keeping the spark alive in your relationship will be hard work but you can and you will be able to do it because you love the other person. You love them so much that you want them to feel your love and you want them to know that you are there for them. Through everything love will overcome but you need to work through all the tough times and as much as you may want to give up God will and He can help you. God will be the one there who will help you through everything, through the easy and tough times, through the small and large times. God will be there and you need to trust in Him.
